TIME TO VISIT ... DOCTOR Z ,who plays drums for the local band around town, before Covid.

Beautiful day today and slept through the night without waking once.  That was a first.  The taxi dropped me off at MIAM Mexican French Bistro at 10 am for Breakfast.

The first breakfast that was served was 7 Blinis with Sour Cream and dill. This was accompanied by a mound of Smoked Salmon and Capers.  A salad with Fresh Figs, Cherry Tomatoes, Radish, Cucumbers, and Red Onions was a side dish. The Cappuccino was more like a weak Latte and paled along side of this:

It was delicious.

A Chef without a Towel is like a Soldier without a Gun
The Chef wanted to know if she could prepare something MORE? So I said "for sure".  The Croque Monsieur with Bechamel made with Raclette Cheese from the Mountains of France caught my attention.

                                                PRESENTATION OF THE BILL

The total bill, without tip was 365 pesos.

I caught a taxi to visit Dr Z and let him know, I'm back!

He was out but his wife invited me in to wait.  He showed up shortly and we went into his office.  He looked at my head over concerns of Melanoma and assured me that it was fine. He requested I bring test recent results done on my leg circulation and said to call him when I wanted a referral to a quality lab for my PSA test.  We talked about the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, attitudes of American citizens toward Covid Mandate of Mask wearing, the need for regulations on gun sales and qualifying classes for gun safety. Also the future of Covid in Oaxaca...beds in the hospitals are near capacity.

It was nice to see him and his wife.  I went to the library to relax and read but I was told I could only browse 20 minutes and take out books if I choose to.  Adriana, the paid Mexican employee for over 8 years, was at the front desk and said hello David! How nice.

Sunday I visited the Zocalo to read and see if Gringos were around.  While sipping my green tea, I thought a snack might be nice.  Then I noticed Chili Nogala on Special. This is a national dish with the Green White Red..colors of the flag.  The fillings usually have nuts and currents along with ? pulled pork, etc.  Sometime hot or cold...this was chilled and delicious.

My camarero, Geraldo, pointed out some Gringos I hadn't seen since returning.  Steve and Pat, from Canada.  Pat's husband had built some nice furniture for me before he passed away with cancer.  They were a wonderful couple that traveled south of the border for years in a camper before settling in Oaxaca and bought a home just outside the city. It was so nice to see Pat with her giving smile.

Monday I staying in most of the day until I needed to walk.  I have to discipline  myself to walk everyday.  It rained a river for 30 minutes in the afternoon then cleared.  The air was so fresh and cool I had to walk over to the Zocalo.  Very few people were out and I hadn't eaten much so decided it was time for my weekly Fresh Salmon and Roasted Veggies at the Tres Bistro.

Covid rules : Silverware wrapped in Plastic

I was the only customer...a first.  I treated myself to a 1/2 carafe of the house Red Wine and finished with a Chocolate kiss the camamera brought me when I complained that was standard finish to a meal before Covid.   I stopped to say hello to Arturo the bartender and get his email so I can send him some of the photos I've taken of Tres Bistro over the years.

On the way home it started to rain AGAIN because I left my rain gear at home thinking , not twice in one day.  I took a cab and chatted away with my Wino Spanglish and got a compliment from the driver.

Today was condo cleaning day.  Before I left, I gave the maid my old big bottle water dispenser and some odds and ends. I now have a pump that fits on the water bottle and pumps the water out by a battery power.

Cabuche was where I had a nice lunch last week and knew they have outstanding breakfasts also.  I had a Hot Chocolate with a Corn Omelet that had goat cheese, corn, and corn fungi. Very healthy and delicious.

I installed a VPN on my computer and started watching Atlantic Crossing last night on PBS.  It coincides with my book Splendid and Vile by Erik Larson, about the bombing of London in WWII. Can't wait to get back to the next episode.  Last night was about Hitler's invasion of Norway.  I visited a museum in Oslo that featured some exhibits about the Norwegian women consorting with the occupying Nazis.  Now Norway is a very rich country.  I remember playing Texas Holdem at the Talking Stick Casino in Phoenix with a couple from Norway who fly's to Phoenix 2-3 times a year on vacation to enjoy Poker and mostly just stay at the casino with occasional side trips.

Today was a great day.  I walked up to one of my favorite Cafes on Hidago for lunch of the Greek salad (Mom is Mexican Pop is Greek) and a Cappuccino.

I wore my new hat I bought for $7 while passing this cute hat shop yesterday.  I have to go back and take photos to show you.  Everything was great so I walked back home and went to bed early.

Nights have been cool here so I sleep comfortably with a heavy blanket after reading some.  I feel so refreshed in the morning when I try to do some exercise after my coffee, before breakfast.  Today it was stretches.  I really felt the heat work up and seep out of my body...stretching!  It felt good.  I hadn't done squats in a long time and balancing exercises on on leg.
I watched another episode of Atlantic Crossing, that was better than hoped for, then around 4 pm I remembered Richard inquired about Quinque  Restaurant and how they were doing?
So I took a long walk over on the West Side to see.

The owner waited on me , as he did two years ago, except he was wearing a neck brace.  He was on a ladder fixing the sign or something when a bike or motorbike hit him from behind and he had whiplash that chipped a bone in his spine.  I had the daily special: Salad , Grilled Fresh Chicken with Veggies on Rice with a beer.  It was worth the walk.

The TV was playing old reruns before Covid of the Oaxaca Dansa that were held outdoors every Wednesday for people to enjoy.
Young and Old.

This is the greatest innovation for shoppers to come down the pike in a long time.  It is so simple and works.  I bought Schweppes tonic at Sam's club so had to buy a case.  I like a Gin and tonic now and then.  If you notice this bottle is has almost 300ml and Exceso Calorias and Exceso Azucares and if it had Exceso Sodium or Exceso Fat....it would say in bold little warning signs you can't miss.  I knew Tonic had sugar in it but one now and then?  But now I look to see.  There are 3 portions of 98 ml with 40 grams of sugar total ...so anyone want some free Tonic?  I put back a lot of items that day.

Yesterday I took the bus in front of my building to Colonial Reforma in the North to have lunch at MIAM French Bistro. It was outstanding.  There is the French way to prepare an Omelet and there is my way.  I've made 1000 or more with different  styles.  Some the raw eggs are cold some are room temperature, some are cooked in butter, butter and olive oil, or with just olive oil.  Some you season prior to cooking...you get the point.  Well this guy nailed it.  I was the best Omelet I ever had and I am an Egg Man.  Poached, basted, shirred, over light, easy, medium, hard....scrambled , baked, souffles, frittatas, etc.

The whole meal was a masterpiece.  He is expanding into dinners.  When I opened my first restaurant I didn't have a cent. I started with breakfasts only.  I needed to grab attention so I would go in at 4 am and peel apples and make fresh Apple Pie to offer the hotel guests with there coffee.  I was part of the motel but independent from them.  It was the first "Motel" in the East. They didn't have TV's , telephones, or any amenities.  You drove your car up to your room and left the next day. I had a lot of truckers and locals loved the Pie and started packing the place for breakfast.  It was set up like a diner.  You sat at the counter, I took your order and cooked it.

Within a month I was open for lunch and in 6 months the diner became a bar and we moved the kitchen into one of the rooms and took the converted the laundry room (no longer necessary) into a sit down dining room that led out by the pool.
MIAM is advertising for kitchen and dining room help before he starts dinners.  It is a limited menu but unique dishes. I can't wait to see how he is going to seat everyone.  He will need a dining room and might have one in the back?
I walked over to Cherdaui after lunch to do some shopping. This one is upscale with many imported items.  They had most everything the same as far as hardware, appliances, clothing, but the food was so confusing it took forever.  There would be olive oils in three different areas, same for pastas, nut milks, tomatoes, etc.  Each time there would be different varieties so you had to run back to the other display to compare. I really didn't buy much of anything but the next time I need cheap box wine...its $2.50 a liter...cheapest in town.

Today the temperatures were in the low 70's and rain forecast but at different times during the day.  It was Saturday so I just read and watched some more Atlantic Crossing.

It was 4 pm and I was hungry so decided on my weekly Salmon and Veggies at Tres Bistro but it was raining out.  Not a downpour but a decent light rain.  I decided it was time to try on my Gore-Tex jacket and pack an umbrella and take a walk in the rain.  Well the rain became a downpour half way there.

I finally got up the courage and walked through rivers while it poured.  The only thing I needed was boots.  My Nike's were soaked and my pants from the knees down but I made it.

I treated myself to a half dozen of Fresh Oyster from the Bahia. They were so fresh and delicious. Then, as usual I ordered the Salmon with Roasted fresh Vegetables.

Ladies at the window table were busy taking selfies.

The dishwasher was called out to mop up the rain water that blew in through the open window.

My waitress didn't forget my complimentary chocolate kiss.

Today I woke to Sunday Morning on CBS.  Great short bits on the week.  I hung out until about 4:00 and walked to Belanc for a SALAD and Beet Juice with Fresh Orange Juice.  Got my 1/2 loaf of bread and returned home at 5 pm on deserted streets.

The streets were quiet and empty...not unusual for Sundays when families stay at home after church.

I finished Atlantic Crossing which paralleled the book ,The Splendid and the Vile,  about the bombing of London and Churchill.  Harry Hopkins, who lived in what used to be Lincoln's office in the White House, played a bigger role conveying Roosevelt's thoughts and American support personally to Churchill.  They became great friends and Churchill kept Hopkins there for an extra week to show him off. Though he was a very disheveled mess with ill health, when he spoke everybody was impressed. Great book and good PBS Masterpiece Theater.

Monday I took the bus to the library but due to a protest/blockade I had to get out and walk quite a bit.

Oscar was there to take my donations of a book, pant, shoes.  I stopped at Ramblas for lunch with Salma and Arnud.  He is starting to feature Seafood on Saturday and Sundays.  Oysters,Mussels, and Clams.  He had some fresh Mackerel I had to try on a Tostada..Sushi style.

Today I welcome my new neighbor, Cheri .  I have to point out all the benefits of living here!  ....AND POST THIS!!!
