22 - 7 FOURTH OF JULY AND GUELAGUETZA IN OAXACA

I start the day with a tour of the new Boutique Hotel next to the Library.   I left to meet the Van to Huayapa in Llano Park for the 4th of July Celebration.  It was a nice day.  I saw Hector who I've known for 8 years.  He runs his magazine stand in the park.

ROOF TOP TERRACE AT THE HOTEL

I enjoyed the 4th with friends.  I had a Hot Dog, Slaw, Potato Salad, Beans and a couple wines and was back home by 5 pm.  While I was there, I met a lady who knew a friend that was leaving Jalatlaco Barrio in Oaxaca City.  She showed me photos of the apartment with a rooftop view.  I agreed to look at it this Monday.
Zoe and Pat were there.  I hadn't seen either in quite a while.

Most of the week was spent getting caught up on shopping with breakfast at ONNO and dinner at Sur de Norte on Wednesday.

FAMOUS CURANDERA WAS IN LIFE MAGAZINE 1953 WITH MAGIC MUSHROOMS. HER
VILLAGERS SHUNNED HER FOR ALLOWING OUTSIDERS TO PARTICIPATE. SHE DIED POOR AND SAD.

CONVECTION OVEN ...MAYBE FOR NEW DIGS?

The next day we decided to have lunch at a new Restaurant...Bacanora in Jalatlaco. It was an "OK" pretentious place that didn't quite make the mark.  Very classy though.

Started to play pool again with Allen and Miguel.  Lunch at Sabina Sabor after...nice Comida (Daily Specials). Mine was Potato-Broccoli Soup with Chili Relleno stuffed with Chicken,Nuts, spices, Chocolate Pudding and Great Limonade. $4.50.

That evening, Carol and I wandered over to our favorite Tres Bistro for our favorite   dinner of Oysters and Grilled Salmon.

The next morning we ate at Cabuche...I think.  Something different and spicy.

BOTH WERE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF HUEVOS RANCHEROS

Happy hour on the rooftop at the Berlina with Joanna from Germany cooking great Sausages, Apple Strudel, Brown Bread, etc all served with great selection of Imported Beers and "Oaxacan Craft Beers"  .   Just a snack this time around.

My good Chef friend for years, Mike Whitesides past President of Las Vegas Culinary Association, now retired from his catering business and a big fan of everything Mexican, wrote and asked if the little Mom and Pop joints were still serving NesCafe instant coffee.  Mike remembers this from is 3 month trip to Mexico and South America in his younger days. Some very small places that can't afford an espresso machine nor making a POT of coffee that goes bad without frequent coffee drinkers still do but in Oaxaca it is very rare.  They take pride serving some fantastic world class coffee grown in Oaxaca that Baristas know how to brew.

OAXACAN CAPPUCCINO AND JAPANESE MATCHA LATTE.

Today, while waiting for the bus, I heard a "Cheer" that caught my attention.  The newly opened Pitico (similar to Circle K) recently opened close by and they hired a cheerleader , gave her a microphone and asked her to bring customers in.  I don't know how successful she was but she was very entertaining.

I had an early lunch at a Mom and Pop small restaurant.  I choose the Fried Chicken Breast Comida with Soup, and Lemonade.  $3.

That evening Carol and I decided to return to Vinyl and Vin.  The concept is Vinyl Rock and Roll, Blues, and Jazz music with Wine and dinner. When you order a glass of wine you also get to pick the music you like.  CC Revival was my pick and Carol enjoyed the Beatles.  We both had the Friday Fish Special: Fresh Sea Bass Veracruz.  My realtor/artist was working at the Art Gallery next door and invited us to the opening new artist show that evening.  We hobnobbed with some friends and met some new friends.  A very nice dinner and evening. You never know what is going to happen when you step out in Oaxaca.

Saturday early evening we decided to return to Humar, the restaurant our friends     Salma and Arnud just relocated to with a larger dining room and roof top bar. Carol         saw Oysters featured on Facebook they were serving tonight.  We enjoyed seeing      them again, had our oysters and a large Quahog Clam chopped with fresh vegetables      and stuffed.   We wanted a drink upstairs but they were full so we headed for               Distilado and a Mezcal cocktail and dessert to finish the night off.
We stopped at a couple galleries on the way.

THIS IS WHITE CORN STREET FOOD DEPICTION

IT IS A CAKE THAT WOULD WIN THE BRITISH BAKING CONTEST...SO GOOD.

The following day we thought Jalatlaco deserved a visit for lunch on the Rooftop of Santa Hierba Restaurant.  I like the "Sister Store" on Guerro but they have been closed.  When I asked about that, I was informed they were adding Rooftop Dining.
Wonderful.  I ordered a Smoked Tuna Plate and Carol a Beet Vegetable Salad.  My Tuna tasted like , looked like, and had the texture of Smoked Pork Loin.  I complained and was reassured it was Tuna.  I then
noticed it was!  Full of Nitrates.  I enjoyed it anyway.  Carol enjoyed hers also.

On the last day of this blog we stopped into a well known Rotisserie Chicken Restaurant that serves a variety of Fresh Chicken Dishes, Salmon, Hamburgers, and have a buffet to pick and choose from if you don't care for what's on the menu.  We ate our Roast Chicken dishes before I could take a photo.  We believe the staircase was built when the building was built.  Next post is only a One Day Venture.  It was one I will never forget.
