25 - 8 LAST TWO WEEKS IN AUGUST - OAXACA

Paid the rent today. 21000 Pesos = $1120.39 . Then spend lunch time shooting pool with Alan.  He has not been playing for the last 2 weeks, but was in good form today.  I think I won two games, but had a nice time.

First half-way decent Sunrise in months...it has been cloudy and hazy.

I had lunch at a restaurant in the Zocalo today. Mayodomo? Chili Nogada...a Mexican specialty dish promoted at this time of year. Green Chile Stuffed with ground meat, nuts, raisins, and spices. Topped with a Bechamel Sauce with Parsley and Pomegranate seeds to represent the colors of the Mexican Flag. One of my favorite dishes. Later that evening, I stopped by Cafe Elfo to listen to one of the best guitarists in Oaxaca, Alvarado. He came with his wife. They own some rental properties in Oaxaca, where Lynn resides. We had a gathering of friends on her rooftop, and he came up and played for us one afternoon. I had Buffalo Wings and "Irish Coffee," which the bartender said he knew how to make.  It arrived "on the rocks" with coffee, whiskey, and milk.

                                        Street Performer....

Saturday, I went to the local barber for a cut.  A new barberess cut my hair with the help of the owner.  Not so great, but on the wall was the photo of a Buddhist Monk who burned himself to death in 1964 in Saigon, a couple of years before I arrived.  The image appeared in Life Magazine, and in the videos of the act, he remained still and never moved.  The picture was colorized to show the flames.
I took a photowalk to the Zócalo and back.

No Mother or Father...but an older 7 or 8-year-old brother selling bracelets to tourists nearby. You see 15-to 16-year-old mothers with a baby and an infant also selling tablecloths.

This Mother is nursing her baby with her breast totally exposed while selling tablecloths to Tourists.

A 15th Birthday Party, Parade, and Dance.  I think she is a little overwhelmed.

                                         Mom and Son

Sunday, I ate a late lunch at TENDAJON, a restaurant on Pino Suarez, where I had breakfast before. I had Quesadillas with Spinach and cheese, Ceviche, and a wine.  Good, but quesadillas were bland.  I would go back, except that on the three or four occasions I have been there, no one smiles, greets, or says goodbye or thank you.  None of the staff. Restaurant employee attitudes are established by the management that hires and trains them, and generally fall into categories:
Business: Offer Specials of the Day. Staff are efficient, but you feel like you are signing a contract, not ordering dinner!
Happy: Staff has a memorized, Rote greeting that they rehearse. Sing song. Giddy. Young.
Solemn: No expression.  "How did you know the deceased?" IS That All?
Professional: Sincere, honest, enjoy their work, and are proud to serve!
Laid back:  Oh! You want a menu? How about dessert? But they are sharing Facebook Reels on their phones.

Divide by 2 and you have the approximate cost in $

I decided to return to try one of their specialties that caught my attention. Chicken SousVida. They were closed on Monday, so I ended up at Vin and Vinyl, which used to be one of my favorites.  The menu had been tweaked a bit, with a 'build your own salad' option and a few extras. I ordered the salad that came out with lots of arugula and spinach, but tiny pieces of the walnut, apple, tomato, Gouda, and ricotta...I could barely find them.

I visited a gallery just up the street on Reforma.

Tuesday, I opted to return to YUKU sushi, where I knew the food was top-notch...and my salad and Rice Bowl were. Only photoed the salad...and just the last morsels of the bowl.

It was delicious... and Juan said he was going to prepare a Japanese Curry dish next week.  He has an excellent menu, but also varies it so I never get bored with his masterpieces.
He combines a multitude of flavors and textures to make each dish truly outstanding.

I returned to Tendajon to try the Sous Vide Chicken in a sealed Envelope, then simmered in temperature-controlled water until ready to serve. Not a menu item, but in this case, it was prepared in advance...I suspect 2-3 days! Very dry. The opposite of what it should be. My last meal there.

Looks good, but it would be better if it weren't so dry. Mole was unique; I didn't detect any cocoa.

Mook Restaurant, located near Consatti Park, was replaced by a new breakfast and lunch spot, a mom-and-pop establishment.  I tried it out. Since there were no poached eggs, I ordered eggs over easy. Still hard! Uncooked fatty bacon and salty refried beans with only orange juice, so I had an overly sweet Matcha Latte. I should have waited until they got their feet wet.

The food photo would have looked good, but it would have been misleading.
Incredible sunrise and wonderful rain.

I met Lynn today for our last lunch before she returns next week. Norte y Sur was closed, so we ate at Olla's on Reforma.  We shared a Combo lunch with Taquitos, queso, and memelas...all tiny but flavorful. Chocolate Cake and Herbal Ice Cream for dessert. I forgot to take a photo of the food, but I loved the matching hand-painted plates and the chips that came with them.

Saturday, the Jimenz Brothers, Mack, Moe, and Manny...Juan, Jose, and Louis arrived to hang some Fish Eye Panoramic Photos I bought.

Head Turner on ABC Saturday News....

My neighbor, Lee, is on my Screen Saver Photos.  I went to Santa Sabor afterwards for my fantastic $5+ lunch.

Fruit and Vegetable Salad...Zucchini, Arugula, Lettuce, Cucumbers, Grapes, Pineapple, Apple, Jicama, Plums, Strawberries, and Papaya. All Organic, fresh and delicious...and Oranges.

                            Meatballs, Rice Pilaf with Gravy

Dessert Crepe with Chocolate Sauce...includes Melon Aide to drink.

I stopped at Cafeto for a Cortado Coffee, the best.

Sausages and Smoked Meats have not been on my diet in Months, so I stopped at Berliner for their excellent homemade Brown Bread, a Kassler Smoked Pork Chop, Mashed Potatoes and Onions with Saurkraut and Apples, and a Belgian Blond Pale Ale at 8% alcohol! 270 pesos included the tip...$14.

...and caught a photo of a Hummingbird.

Lovely sunrise this morning, and while preparing coffee, I checked my BP, which was up.  Did a little exercise and tried again. Still up.  I took my morning Meds, then left the coffee and decided a long walk was in order.

                         Halfway... no More...turning back.

This man jogged up the steps in a zigzag pattern.

This "Tree Trunk" was once a Tree. Still stands on its Roots.

We all hope to go there someday...

Pumping his tire up with a bicycle tire pump.

                                                 The End

8 am...one hour later, and Juanita is busy mopping the rooftop

...and I feel great, so I'm going to have that coffee now.

The next morning, I went for another early morning walk and breakfast at Origine.

2 men saw me take this and asked why?  I explained that in the U.S., I had never seen anyone clean a garage door, and I thought it was part of Mexican culture to clean everything daily.  I respected that and appreciated it. The man just down from her just emptied a "dumpster" into his barrels on the cart he pushes around town. See any trash in the street?

The Tapioca Chia Seed Pudding with dried Coconut was TOO sweet and had little of the Chia Seeds in it.

The Poached Eggs on Potato with Greens and Hollandaise Sauce... had no Hollandaise, which was the reason I ordered it, but it was still good.

Finally, you get to meet my masseuse, Eliz, out on a date.  She lives down the street. Nice to see someone I know.  Later, I met my ex-landlord at the Mercado while I was buying some bananas. Took the bus home and arrived at 9:30 am. Excellent start to the day.

Yuku, my neighborhood Sushi/Japanese restaurant, was featuring Curry this week.  I was anxious to try it, but when I arrived, Juan said it would be the next day. I was going to Democrats Abroad that day, so I made a note not to eat but to wait and visit Yuku afterward.  When I arrived, he apologized, but the Curry dish would not be ready until Thursday.  I ate there anyway since I was hungry and had a nice dinner.  Thursday, around 5 pm, I returned.  Now I was excited for the Curry special, but there was a Pizza there that the employees were eating. Juan explained that the Curry Dish wasn't to be served until 8 pm, and since I had gone without lunch, anticipating this excellent meal, I decided to try his competition, Edo, just around the corner.
Edo opened a few weeks ago but had yet to put out a sign. I believe the owner is the same person who opened Yuku, hired Juan as the Sushi Chef, and brought in a manager. Later, when it wasn't proving to be very successful, he sold it to Juan.  Juan went to Tokyo for a month to expand his knowledge and returned to improve Yuku and make it successful. I think there is room for both, but after eating at Edo, I believe Juan may need to adjust his menu to avoid competing with Edo and instead establish a unique niche that Edo doesn't have.
My impressions were excellent. Edo's menu was varied, including Filet Mignon, a Fresh Grilled Fish dinner, along with a vast selection of Sushi, Maki, and extensive fresh fish options. The owner gained his experience in L.A. and became the executive chef of Nobu. This very high-end Sushi restaurant had expanded into Scottsdale, Arizona, just after I arrived in Oaxaca.  I have been there and was pleased, but thought it was expensive.
Edo's menu is less expensive than Nobu's, but it is reasonable, and its quality is not as high due to availability issues.

The house wine by the glass was a fair pour and reasonable.  I waited for some time while the Sushi chef chatted with another employee for an extended period, and I was the only customer.  There was one couple that had already been served. We were the only ones in the whole restaurant. I doubt that will be the case after the word gets out.

I walked to my Cardiologist's office to make an appointment, but it was gone. He moved, so I stopped at Tasta Vin for a lunch Salad.

Saturday eve I returned to Yuku for the fourth time to try the Curry.  But it sold out Friday?!&% .  Let it go. I ate Chicken Yakitori and their Dumplings...then Juan sent over a cup of Miso with Tofu to apologize for no Curry. I didn't tell him I ate at his competition and how good it was.  I will wait when it's less crowded.

Chicken a bit well done and with salty sauce?  Tonite I will return to Edo to try some more.  See you in October!  I will leave next week for Arizona, Buffalo , Albany then Whitefield N. H. to Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa for my Birthday reunion with my cousins.  My mother would have been 100 this year.  Next post will probably be from Buffalo...then Oaxaca in October.  Enjoy the cool weather...keep moving.

Has anyone received a notice stating that, from now on, they must use ID.me to access social media? Perhaps it is because of the anti-Trump articles I've been posting to protest the way our government is being "governed"???

Just before returning from France, American Airlines requested a report from me stating where I was going in the U.S., how long I would be there, and if I was traveling on...where was I going to?  I protested: I am a Citizen of the U.S. returning home, I am a Vietnam Vet, I've owned 5 houses in my lifetime and run 5 businesses I started, and why is this requested?

Oh, it is not for us; the U.S. government just enacted this mandatory request.

The last time I was given that request was when I entered China and North Korea?

Then, Social Security sent me a letter updating its policies and providing new information that recipients should be aware of.  I need to change my login URL to login.gov and verify my identity with my local Post Office in Scottsdale.  They had me fill out various documents with my SSN, birth date, address, etc., and then sent me a form to take to a specific Post Office in my district. I had to stand in line and present it to the postal worker, who would then identify me as David Taylor.  If I couldn't make it to the Post Office or it was too busy, I could go to another one in the same district.

Palantir is doing a great job of stealing our private information from Social Security, Medicare, and the IRS, to name a few.  Also, setting up surveillance cameras and devices to track our whereabouts and identify us. Of course, there is DOGE, the Federal Courts, the "Justice Dept"..ho ho ho.

I will be at the Post Office next week while planning my visits to family in New England and New York. BREAKING NEWS:
